An open letter to the Japanese People...


I would really like to apologize to you
about what is happening in Iraq now,
今、イラクで起きていることについて
私は本当にあなた方に謝りたいと思っています

and I would like you to know
that Iraqis are doing their best
to find and release the three innocent Japanese hostages:
Ms Takato, Mr Koriyama, and the young Mr Imai.
そして高遠さん、郡山さん、そして年若き今井さんという
無実の3人の日本人の人質を見つけだすために
イラクの人々は今一生懸命がんばっていることを
あなた方に知ってもらいたいと思っています

Please know that Iraqis in general have
feelings of respect towards Japan,
一般のイラク人が日本に対して
尊敬の念をもってることを知ってください

and they look up to the Japanese people
who rebuilt their country after the WWII,
また第2次世界大戦後、ふたたび国を立て直した
日本の人たちを尊敬しているのです

Iraqi people believe in the Japanese cultural experience,
and try to learn lessons from what you did
and what you are doing now.
イラク人は日本の文化的な経験が正しいと信じています
そして日本の人たちがしてきたこと、今していることから
教訓を学ぼうとしています

You must know that I have never met a single Iraqi
with feelings of hate or aggression
towards the Japanese people,
私は未だかつて日本の人たちに対して
憎しみや攻撃的な感情を持ったイラク人には
１人も出会ったことがありません

and these kidnappings do not reflect in anyway
the feelings of the majority of Iraqis,
とにかくこれらの人質事件はイラク人の
大多数の感情を反映したものではありません。

most of us wish that these incidents didn’t happen,
私たちの大半はこんなことは起きなければよかったのに
と思っています

and that the first contact between our cultures
didn’t start by these violent incidents.
私たちの文化の最初の出会いが
このような暴力的なもので始まるべきではなかったと
思っているのです

I hope that the kidnapers are just trying
to draw the attention of your people,
and I hope they will let the three hostages
go back home safe.
誘拐者たちはただ日本のみなさんの注意を
引こうとしているだけだと願っています。
3人を無事に家に帰してくれようにと願っています。

I would like to ask you to put more pressure
on your government to pull out
your Japanese Defence Forces from Iraq.
自衛隊をイラクから撤退させるように
もっと政府に圧力をかけてくれるようにと
私はあなた方にお願いしたいのです

Let the Bush administration handle and solve
the problem with the Iraqi people.
ブッシュ政権にはイラク人とともに
問題を扱い解決させてください

It is their responsibility.
それは彼らの責任なのですから

Don’t give the Bush administration
a fake international cover.
ブッシュ政権にまやかしの国際的な
覆いをかぶせないで

Please don’t let your sons and daughters
from the military die in Iraq,
どうぞあなた方の息子さんや娘さんを
イラクでの軍事行動で死なせないでください

and don’t start a terrible history of violence
恐ろしい暴力の歴史を始めないで下さい

and hate between your people and our people.
あなた方と私たちの間に憎しみを生まないで
